I’ve come upon another great milestone in life: Graduation! This time no ceremony was held, I didn’t have to wear any unflattering robes or square caps (and really, what’s the point of the square caps?), and nobody was there to congratulate me on making it this far (in fact, I’m sure my parents wish they had never had to witness this day).
You see, I graduated from the singles ward.
And really, why isn’t there more fuss made about it? I dutifully served my time (wait, that makes it sound like prison… well, ok, I guess that’s kind of accurate)! I didn’t flunk out like all those sell-outs who went and got married. (What do you mean I sound a little bitter?) And now it’s time for me to move on.
I weighed my 2 options: the old(er) singles ward, or the home ward. After listening to a few horror stories and relying on my imagination to fill in the gaps, I chose to go to my home (family) ward.
And I can’t even begin to tell you how wonderful my first Sunday there was!
Sacrament meeting started off with a baby blessing. I haven’t witnessed a baby blessing in years and it was so great! But as great as it was I knew I was going to LOVE this ward when the second woman who bore her testimony said, “…and I love this beautiful spring weather. It’s not too hot, and it’s not too cold…” One of the voices in my head followed it up with “…all you need is a light jacket!”
Any Miss Congeniality fans out there? Hello?! Is this thing on?!!
I’ve been in this particular ward before. About 5 years ago for just a few months when I first moved to B-town. After sacrament meeting so many of the wonderful women came up and welcomed me back. I was surprised they remembered me! Sunday school was fabulous, really fabulous (but it usually is whichever ward I’m in… not always, but usually)! And relief society was great!
There’s such a mix of people in this ward, I love it. It is definitely a newlywed or nearly-dead ward. There are 3 young women, about the same number of young men, and I may be the only single person over the age of 21 (and under 45). But I enjoyed making googly-eyes at the little boy in front of me during sacrament meeting and I love the little old ladies in relief society who tell everyone who makes a comment to “speak up”!
Who doesn’t love old people, seriously?!
But really the best part of all is the 3-minute drive to church. That's one-tenth of what it took me to go to the singles ward! I actually had to take a 10-minute nap because I was going to be at church too early! (Le sigh!)
Aaah, I feel like I’m home!

Ah, my sweet Brookie! Happy (late) b-day. And happy graduation!
So Em has all kinds of activities lined up for whoever wants to come. (And, lots of people do). You should friend her and check them out!
Brooke,
Congratulations on the graduation!! I can't believe they didn't have some sort of mourning party for you leaving--doesn't that singles ward know what they've lost? SHAME!!!!!
If you had moved into my ward I would put you in the primary (which is where I'm serving). Maybe as head of the nursery. Wouldn't that be fun?! Keep us apprised of your new calling.
Before I even read the rest of the sentence I was quoting Miss Congeniality in my head.
